Location: Alexandria, VA
This project, located in a transitional neighborhood of a historic city, replaced an existing facility that did not meet the needs of the community. The design team was retained to work with the neighborhood and Department of Parks and Recreation to develop a building program, explore how the facility would fit on the site, prepare optional design solutions, and gain community approval as a first step in gaining political support to fund the project. After meeting multiple times with the community, universal support was gained.
This new 35,000-SF facility includes facilities for the Department of Recreation, seniors, network pre-school, and the Department of Health. Features include a gymnasium, multi-purpose activity rooms, senior center, preschool classrooms, boxing ring and an outdoor pool.
The center is a LEED Gold® facility.
