What we do

Committed To Craft.

Through intentional design and an emphasis on sustainability, we create great places to live, work, play, and learn.

What we do

Design Philosophy.

…those underlying principles that shape how we do our work and what we try to achieve for our clients.

Our Goals

Our aim is to help you achieve the highest value for your investment. We believe that good design is mostly a product of skill, creativity, and innovation – not a generous budget. We believe our hallmark is the way we bring innovation, creativity, personal attention, and solid design solutions at an affordable price.

Our Commitment

Our commitment to explore and present design solutions that provide even more benefit than our clients were anticipating often leads to pleasant surprises. This is especially true for projects that have specific physical and budgetary constraints. The best solutions often come when a variety of ideas are explored. Many designs fall short of their full potential not because of a limited budget, but because of a tendency to accept the easy, first solution.

We believe each project is unique and can benefit from the development of numerous potential design solutions.

Feasibility Assessments

Over the past 10 years, RRMM Architects has completed more than 100 facility assessments across the Mid-Atlantic. Assessments are completed to document the present condition of facilities. This is essential in forecasting funding requirements to address deficiencies, upgrades, renovations, or replacements. When undertaking studies and assessments, RRMM endeavors to tailor our efforts to produce an efficient, cost-effective result for our clients. We are careful to develop a strategy that produces the needed results without the undue cost that can often be associated with excessive or premature detail.

The design process begins with programming, to identify the project’s needs, values, and criteria. The RRMM Team starts with a careful understanding of your site and its intrinsic physical characteristics. We garner a full understanding of your project goals and aspirations, whether it be to your current instructional offerings, community involvement, or mission-specific functionality. Our programming encompasses not only space utilization and functionality, but also furnishings and sustainability goals.

We understand that every client and every project’s needs are different. The RRMM team brings hundreds of projects worth of success and lessons learned with no preconceived notions to the design process. We will use your project specifications and design parameters along with the results of the programming phase as the foundation for your project. Once we understand your project goals, we will provide you options for consideration, and based on your feedback, we’ll tailor the design to meet your specific needs. We highly promote stakeholder group involvement throughout the design process. Our team uses various graphics and models to communicate design scope and intent and welcomes interaction and feedback to obtain necessary design input.

Construction Administration

We realize that the test of a successful project is not only how it starts, but equally, how it finishes. By providing construction administration services, we remain an active participant from the initial schematic drawings all the way through the end of construction, assuring you a successful project. As the architect, we are more knowledgeable on the concepts and requirements worked out prior to bidding than any separate entity brought on board later. We can oversee that the integrity of the initial design concepts and programmatic requirements are upheld during the construction process.

Master Planning.

RRMM has extensive experience in providing master planning services for public and private clients. This experience includes developing images and displays of existing and proposed client facilities in an architectural style that is reflective of the site environs, community, and history. It also identifies the most appropriate locations for proposed facilities through a series of interactive client workshops. In preparation for this initial workshop, the RRMM Team often conducts historic and cultural resource studies. These studies help to develop options for preservation and assess opportunities for the design of sustainable features. They also assist in evaluating vehicle and pedestrian traffic patterns to create concepts for site improvements, the goal being to minimize pedestrian and traffic conflict. Other related planning services include detailed comprehensive facility assessments, which often include cost estimates, space utilization, demographic analyses, enrollment projections, renovation versus new construction analyses, ADA assessments, hazmat assessments, laser scanning, and much more.

Interior Design.

Our in-house interior design studio brings together a team of talented designers and planners with expertise in numerous markets. Our interior designers are first and foremost problem solvers. They are dedicated to exceptional service for our clients, who use, visit, and inhabit the interior environments that they create. Their involvement early in the programming stage affords them success in accomplishing our client’s goals and constraints for space utilization, as well as the maintenance requirements for interior finishes and furnishings. Our focus is on interiors that work. Whether it be creating inspiring and welcoming spaces, workplace functionality, or highly specialized areas, our interior designers create an aesthetic specifically suited for each client.

At RRMM, we are focused on understanding the environmental impact of our designs and material choices, consistently striving for positive environmental outcomes. We know that social and physical well-being, a thriving natural environment, and economic viability are all interdependent. Sustainability is the result of successfully balancing these facets. As an early adopter and sustainability leader, RRMM has learned to focus on creating site designs that integrate with the community and environmental context. We do this by selecting durable, environmentally appropriate building materials and designing buildings and systems to use as little energy as possible. We strive for our designs to produce at a minimum, as much renewable energy on site as is needed, and provide healthy, supportive building interiors through daylighting, conditioned outside air, and low-to-zero-VOC building materials. RRMM fully supports all the green building rating systems and has experience with dozens of certified buildings. We at RRMM have embarked on a mission to achieve zero carbon emissions (net zero) with our new and major renovation projects. Our clients’ net-zero buildings will require extreme energy efficiency, with 100% of power produced through on-site renewable energy, thereby eliminating the use of on-site fossil fuels.

b+w mep scan

Laser Scanning.

Tools of the trade are evolving, and as they do, so are we. Laser scanning provides a higher level of detail in the same amount of time it takes to perform a traditional manual field investigation, capturing details that are not readily accessible through surveying. With laser scanning, RRMM can deliver a 3D “walk-through” of the space, providing a clear understanding of existing conditions, thus leading to better design decisions. Laser scanning allows us to identify and address more potential construction issues during the very early stages of design—before construction begins. This lessens the possibility for surprises during construction, as well as the potential for RFIs and change orders.
