K-12 Education Middle School
Taylor Middle School.
Fauquier County, Virginia
W.C. Taylor Middle School (TMS) includes a full renovation to the existing 80,000 SF facility as well as multiple additions totaling over 68,000 SF. These additions and renovations are part of Fauquier County Public School’s long-range plan. Their plan includes closing one of their existing middle schools and moving half the student population to TMS. The additions include a new prominent main entrance with secure vestibule, administrative offices, music spaces, cafetorium and kitchen, competition gym and locker rooms, new media center, student entrance at the rear of the school and science labs. FCPS’s request to celebrate its history will be a major theme throughout the interior design of the renovation. The intention of the overall design is sharing the school’s past achievements with its new student body for years to come.
The renovation of existing spaces includes upgrading the existing Career and Technical Education labs, reconfiguration of existing classroom space to accommodate Special Education requirements and restoration of the existing auditorium to celebrate its historical significance. One of the more significant aspects is improving the overall circulation of the building. Corridors will now connect on each end of the building that were previously interrupted by programmed space. This prevents the requirement to move to another floor to reach the other end of the building. As a result, it significantly improves the overall building organization. To assist with construction and scheduling, the students will temporarily relocate to one of the existing middle schools. The relocation allows the general contractor full access to the building which prevents the need for phased construction sequencing. This ultimately helps with cost and the installation of a new sprinkler system throughout the facility.
W.C. Taylor Middle School was the first African American school in the county, and its rich tradition is a source of pride in the community and very active alumni association.
