Chesapeake Regional – Chapel.
Chesapeake, Virginia
Chesapeake Regional Health hired RRMM Architects to design a new interfaith chapel space inside Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. The 2,600 SF space for the new chapel previously contained medical records and staff support space. As with any renovation to a complex facility such as a hospital, understanding and navigating existing conditions were a challenge. RRMM utilized 3D scanning technology at the beginning of the project to capture accurate documentation of existing conditions and to eliminate issues during construction.
Another challenge was Chesapeake Regional Health’s desire for a spiritual, interfaith space that welcomes and serves all potential users. As part of initial programming, RRMM participated in multiple meetings with representatives from various faith communities. The chapel presents an inclusive environment while also accommodating specific faith requirements such as hand washing and prayer orientation. The chapel is also flexible. It provides a variety of spaces – small, large, private, open – to accommodate private, intimate moments as well as large scale events. The design includes a private prayer area, a meditation room, an office, and a conference room. Soft lighting elements were carefully integrated to emulate natural skylight, creating a serene and uplifting atmosphere for reflection and worship.
Along with complete architectural, interior design, and engineering services, RRMM also provided design assistance for the owner’s FF&E selections and for a comprehensive, state-of-the-art technology package. While the chapel is on the first floor of the hospital, the main overhead fixture contains multiple settings to simulate natural daylight.
Designed to provide a peaceful and inclusive environment, the new space accommodates up to 64 guests and features advanced audiovisual capabilities for broadcasting ceremonies to a larger audience.
