Richmond Fire Station #21.

This project consisted of a New 3-Bay, 3-Story modern-day Fire Station located in the City of Richmond, VA. This new station replaced the original Fire Station #21 facility at the same site.
The first floor serveed as the ‘main building entry and emergency apparatus areas’, and consisted of a main public entrance with a secured lobby & elevator, along with (3) drive-through app-bays, decon/clean room, scba room, gear locker room, toilet room, and other building support spaces.

The second floor served as the ‘main administrative area’, and consisted of a secondary secured lobby with public restrooms and shared kitchenette, adjoining large training/community room, administrative offices and a staff fitness room.

The third floor served as the staff’s ‘shared work and sleep area’, and consisted of a combined kitchen-dining-day room space with an outdoor patio that encourages social engagement. The individual bunk and toilet-shower rooms, and other staff & public spaces are designed to create an all inclusive environment, and conforms to applicable ADA accessibility design standards.
This new fire station was designed meet today’s unique emergency response needs, including NFPA 1710/1581/1583, FEMA & ISO standards, to ensure the station staff consistently meet and/or exceed the City’s emergency response time objectives, along with providing an environment that supports optimum health and wellness for the staff.

The new station included a prominent ‘architectural tower’ feature that conveys a strong civic presence. The suspended entry canopy and curved bench seat with patio brick pavers offer a ‘pedestrian friendly’ entrance plaza to welcome visitors and invokes community connectivity.
