Takoma Park Library.

Takoma Park, Maryland

The City of Takoma Park, MD, engaged RRMM for the demolition of the existing library and the construction of a new, approximately 19,000-square-foot library building located at 101 Philadelphia Avenue in Takoma Park, MD. The new single-story facility will be connected to the existing community center and police station. The scope of work includes the construction of the new library, associated parking lot, stormwater management upgrades, retaining walls, streetscape improvements, and all other elements shown in the project drawings.

Sustainability was a top priority for the city, and the project has been designed to meet LEED Gold certification standards. The site incorporates prominent stormwater management and bioretention features that filter and retain runoff on-site before it is released into local streams. The roof will host a dense array of solar panels, while the interior will offer abundant natural light, low-emitting finishes, and tables crafted from wood reclaimed from trees that were removed during construction.

The library will include bright, welcoming spaces for both adult and children’s reading areas, computer labs, public meeting rooms, and a spacious staff room. The project also includes interior renovations to the existing community center.

The design team led a community facilitation process to discuss program needs, service needs, design options, and site planning implications. A series of seven options were studied. The preferred option will expand the library, and add program and makerspace, a series of group study rooms, and a young adult area and a senior program room. This design also protects three of the major trees adjacent to the library.
