Location: JEB Little Creek-Fort Story Norfolk, VA
This Design-Build project with Noah Enterprises and MEB Construction provided a headquarters facility for the First Naval Construction Division—the Seabees. The two-story facility provides an efficiently configured command headquarters, administrative areas, a Sensitive Compartmented Intelligence Facility (SCIF), data processing areas, administrative storage space, support facilities, open work areas, and mechanical, electrical, and communications spaces. The building is designed with high-end finishes—including terrazzo, porcelain tile, and plush carpeting. The Seabee monument was refurbished and relocated from the previous building to the new site.
A variety of sustainable design features ensured the Seabees new home attained LEED Platinum certification. Significant features include a rain harvesting system used for toilet/urinal flushing as well as irrigation, permeable pavers in the parking lot to reduce run-off and pollution and bio retention swales to comply with the Navy’s LID (low-impact development) mandates. Also included is a roof with a high solar reflectance to reduce the heat island effect and an efficiency reverse cycle geothermal chiller (heat pump) coupled to a closed geothermal well field located under the parking lot. This building is the first LEED Platinum certified building for the Navy on the East Coast.
