Location: Norfolk, VA
Nauticus is a contemporary museum that uses the natural setting of Norfolk’s harbor to showcase global maritime commerce and the world’s largest Navy. Outtakes is the restaurant at Nauticus, located next to the gift shop. It provides an assortment of quick cuisine items such as pre-made and ready-made sandwiches, fountain drinks, soups and salads, and snacks. The facility, opened in 1994, was showing its age and not functioning as the inviting, comfortable space the museum had envisioned. RRMM was contracted to re-design the space to give it a more vibrant and welcoming feel, while still maintaining the nautical theme.
The new design allows the existing furnishings to complement the space, allowing the project to stay on budget, while still providing the fresh, updated look desired by the client.
The project received the 2009 Award of Merit for Best Renovated/Historic Rehabilitation Project by HRACRE Excellence in Design Awards and the 2011 First Place Award in Hospitality by ASID Interior Design Excellence Awards.
