RRMM was retained to prepare a space needs analysis and design options for the renovation of the existing 30,000 SF facility and an expansion of about 14,000 SF to accommodate current space needs. The expansion added meeting rooms, activity rooms, large multipurpose/event room and common space. The work includes the replacement of the MEP systems and all finishes. Sitework in support of the expansion and to enhance the environmental regulations was also addressed.
Unique Challenges: The McLean Community Center renovation and expansion was designed to address the growing space needs of the facility and to use the opportunity to improve the existing building’s sense of place. As a result of multiple additions over the years, the existing facility was difficult to navigate and the floor plan lacked coherence. By expanding the main lobby and arranging the new addition to enclose a central courtyard, the design provided the additional meeting and fitness spaces needed while providing a central organizing element that allows patrons to orient themselves within the facility.
