With an increased focus on career and technical education (CTE), Isle of Wight County Schools decided to renovate and incorporate several new structures at Smithfield and Windsor High School. RRMM designed these renovations and additions to enhance educational curriculum and focus on career and technical education. These improvements were planned over three independent phases so that portions of the facility were completed to free up space for the other renovations to take place.
The scope of work at Windsor High School includes such spaces as a “hands-on” construction lab, greenhouse, cosmetology lab, project collaboration space and renovation of the existing media center. Most notably, Windsor High School now enjoys the addition of a fully-functioning farm that includes classroom space, as well as a barn that houses small livestock and a fenced pasture.
Smithfield High School received new football and JROTC field houses with a large protected space to allow the cadets to practice formations and drills during inclement weather. An existing vocational building underwent a comprehensive renovation to create a state-of-the-art makerspace and incorporate curriculums as mechatronics, welding, health sciences with nursing and dental hygiene, and culinary arts.
