Location: Shenandoah County, VA
The goal of the renovation and expansion to the historic Edinburg School was to provide more efficient and effective methods to deliver educational services to special needs and alternative education students in Shenandoah County. Our team held numerous discussions with stakeholders to determine how diversified programs would be seamlessly housed under one roof. Meetings were also conducted to identify design concepts and renovation techniques to preserve the historic integrity of the project.
By placing the new addition at the rear of the project site and connecting it to the existing building, the original historic building and front lawn were maintained as the undisturbed, prominent view. This is an important feature from an historic and community sentiment perspective. Another key feature of the design was a new, two-story lobby that connects the five different floor levels. A monumental stair and elevator provide convenient, ADA-compliant access from a single lobby to all major building areas.
