This project involved converting Auburn High School to a Middle School. A key feature in the conversion was the preservation and enhancement of the original 1938 Auburn High School, the primary façade and the 1953 addition. These historic components were good reasons why Montgomery County Public Schools wanted to renovate the historic community icon. The design produced a fundamentally different layout much more akin to a modern middle school that accommodates 480-students and is expandable to 600-students. The new layout effectively supports a team-teaching strategy and a “home” for each grade level. Each grade level home can operate somewhat independently from the others, and students from one grade level have no need to travel into other grade level homes to accommodate daily class changes. The homes are also interchangeable, allowing administrators to decide which grade configuration is preferred in a given year.
